Heavy metal rock has seen its fair share of ups and downs with some decades featuring high record sales while others have seen a sharp slump. This genre of rock originated from the United Kingdom but quickly took root in the United states, Canada and other parts of the world. Here is a list of the top 7 current metal bands that are rekindling the passion of the 80s with their creative and original sounds.

7. Trivium


With over 8 studio albums and 18 singles this band has become one of the most recognized heavy metal acts. It was formed in the late 90s and has received 3 World Music Award nominations. Some of its top tracks are The Sin and The Sentence, Until the World Goes Cold and In Waves.

6. Foo Fighters


While it is largely recognized as a heavy metal band some of its songs are quite slow and may be mistaken for a different genre of rock. The band was formed in 1994 and has over the years won 12 grammy awards and 1 American Music Award. Some of its top tracks are The Pretender, Everlong and Best of You.

5. System of a Down


The band’s name is sometimes shortened to SOAD. Formed in 1994 this band has managed to win a huge following by metal lovers around the world. It has been nominated for the best hard rock band performance four times but only won one grammy. Some of its best tracks include Chop Suey, Toxicity and Hypnotize.

4. Lamb of God


The band was formed in Richmond, Virginia in the year 1994. It has released a number of albums with four of them making it to the top 10 list. Some of the band’s most popular songs include Laid to Rest, Walk with Me in Hell and Redneck.

3. Mastodon


It is hard to talk about the best metal bands without mentioning Mastodon. It was formed in 2000 and has over the years managed to release six albums. The band has seen two of its albums rise to the top 100 worldwide. It has also won a grammy for the best metal performance. Some of its top tracks include Show Yourself, Steambreather and Oblivion.

2. Avenged Sevenfold


This is arguably one of the most successful of the metal bands that have remained relevant in this millenium. This is partly attributed to the fact that their type of music is not too hard for radio play. It has its origins in Huntington Beach, California and was formed in the late 90s. Some of its top tracks include Hail to the King, So Far Away and Nightmare.

1. Slipknot


This is an American rock band that hails from Des Moines in Iowa. The band was established in the mid 90s by Shawn Crahan , Joey Jordison who was also the main drummer and Paul Grayson who played the bass guitar. It has over the years kept fans entertained by energetic performances coupled with thought provoking imagery. The band was thrust into the limelight when it released its first album titled Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. Some of the top tracks by this band include Snuff, Killpop and The Devil in I.
