Transcript of the Show
[INTRO]From 40 years and 1 month ago, this is Ronnie James Dio-fronted Black Sabbath and “Heaven and Hell” kicking off a very special show in which you could very well win this or any of a dozen other albums!
—————————————-
Black Sabbath – Heaven and Hell
—————————————-
My name is Pariah Burke, and I’m your hard talking, heavy drinking, hairball of a horny hedonist host.
Normally on the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show we play a weekly game called the Cover Song of the Week. Late in the show I play for your a Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, or Hair Band cover of someone else’s song regardless of the genre of the original. Throughout the show leading up to the Cover Song of the Week, I drop clues before playing that cover in the last half hour of the show. This week’s show we’re playing a different game–and it’s a game that could result in you winning an album on vinyl, CD, or MP3 download.
Last month I asked my listeners to help me put together two playlists–Hard, Heavy & Hairy songs about Heaven and Hard, Heavy & Hairy songs about Hell. The responses were so enthusiastic and numerous, I decided I wanted to do something more than just a couple of fun Facebook posts.
This week on Hard, Heavy & Hair we’re playing Heaven versus Hell. I’m going to play for you a bunch of Hard Rock Heavy Metal and Hair Band songs about Heaven and about Hell. One versus the other in pairs. After you listen to both songs, choose which one you like better. Which one wins, heaven or hell. Because Hard, Heavy & Hair is a recorded show, you need to keep track of your voting yourself. At the end of the show, visit the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show’s website and tell me your score, which will automatically enter you into a drawing to receive an album of your choice on me.
Got it? Listen to every song pair–one will be about Heaven and the next about Hell–and then decide which one you like better. Keep track of the scoring, Heaven versus Hell. At the end of the show, I’ll tell you where to send that scoring and your name and email address so you can enter to win an album of your choice.
Are you ready? Here’s your first Heaven versus Hell song pair.
—————————————-
Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven
AC/DC – Highway to Hell
—————————————-
Led Zeppelin “Stairway to Heaven” versus AC/DC “Highway to Hell,” the shot fired in the musical Heaven Versus Hell War. Which one do you think is the better song? Take note of your answer, ’cause it could win you a free album of your choice!
The next two combatants are right after these brief messages.
[ ======================================== BREAK 1]I’m Pariah Burke, and YOU, my dear listener, and deciding the fate of the Rock world, whether songs about Heaven or songs about Hell win, and you’re doing it not just for fun, though it is LOTS of fun, but also for prizes. I’ll tell you more about that again shortly.
Right now, it’s time to decide again: Which song is better, “Angel” or “Shout at the Devil.” Who wins? Aerosmith or Motley Crue?
—————————————-
Aerosmith – Angel
Mötley Crüe – Shout at the Devil
—————————————-
Who won that shootout? How about this next one? This is Slayer versus Pantera.
—————————————-
Slayer – South Of Heaven
Pantera – Cowboys from Hell
—————————————-
I never said I was going to make these Heaven versus Hell songs easy to choose from, but choose you must. Which one wins? Slayer or Pantera? Which is a better song in your opinion: Slayer’s “South of Heaven” or Pantera’s “Cowboys from Hell”?
There are plenty more hard choices coming up in this Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, and Hair Band clash between Heaven and Hell.
[ ======================================== BREAK 2]If you’re just tuning in, well, then you’re already 3 battles down, so you’ll need to catch up. On this week’s Hard, Heavy & Hair Show we’re playing an epic song battle game called Heaven Versus Hell. Every song you hear is about Heaven or about Hell, and they’re fighting each other across the flaming airwaves. Who wins–whether Heaven prevails or Hell rules supreme–that’s entirely up to YOU. You are voting for a winner in every pair of songs, and your votes could get you your choice of albums free. And I don’t mean these are crappy albums. I’m going to buy for winners whatever album they want–within reason.
Ready to play again? This is round 4, and it’s a tough one because both songs are by the same band. Which Stryper song wins in Heaven versus Hell?
—————————————-
Stryper – Honestly
Stryper – To Hell With the Devil
—————————————-
Tough choice there in Round 4, Stryper versus Stryper, “Honestly” versus “To Hell with the Devil.”
Maybe this one will be a little easier. Cuing up on the side of the angels is Five Finger Death Punch going head-to-head with the Devil’s own party planners, L.A. Guns.
—————————————-
Five Finger Death Punch – Wrong Side of Heaven
—————————————-
Hold onto your thoughts about that Heaven song. It’s Hellacious rival is right after this brief station identification.
[ ======================================== BREAK 3 (Bottom of Hour)]—————————————-
L.A. Guns – Hellraisers Ball
—————————————-
“Wrong Side of Heaven” or “Hellraisers’ Ball,” which one gets your vote for the better song? Write down your vote for the side of Heaven or Hell.
Here’s your next Heaven Versus Hell fight. Who wins is entirely up to you. First up, Warrant with “Heaven.”
—————————————-
Warrant – Heaven
AC/DC – Hells Bells
—————————————-
AC/DC’s “Hells Bells” on the side of Hell versus Warrant’s “Heaven” on the side of the angels. Which one wins? Keep track of your score, because you could win any album of your choice (within reason, says the pencil-necked lawyer screaming ‘no, no, no’ on the other side of the studio glass), just for playing on this very special Heaven Versus Hell edition of the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show.
Here’s pairing number 7, Sammy Hagar versus Seven Witches.
—————————————-
Sammy Hagar – Buying My Way Into Heaven
Seven Witches – Hell is for Children
—————————————-
Picking a winner there could be a tough call. A Rare Hare Sammy Hagar borderline Thrash song, or a Dark Metal cover of one of Pat Benetar’s biggest hits? I’m glad I’m not the one choosing a winner.
More Heaven Versus Hell coming up.
[ ======================================== BREAK 4] [ ————— BREAK FILL for NET → ]On this week’s Hard, Heavy & Hair Show we’re playing an epic song battle game called Heaven Versus Hell. Every song you hear is about Heaven or about Hell, and it’s up to you to choose a winner from each battle. And your votes could get you your choice of albums free.
I’m your host, Pariah Burke, in case you’ve forgotten. And I’m getting into the spirit of the show by alternating my shots of bourbon between Angels Envy and Jim Beam Devil’s Cut.
If you aren’t familiar with them, they’re both about 90-proof. I’m not a big Jim Beam drinker, but I wanted to try the Devil’s Cut partly because Mila Kunis is the spokeswoman, and she’s sexy as fuck. And what better time to try Devil’s Cut than for this Heaven versus Hell show? Devil’s Cut is the bourbon extracted from the walls of the barrels used to make other Jim Beam products, which gives it a very heavy wood nose and smokier, dark fruit, molasses, nut, ripe citrus, and caramel spice palate. Jim Beam Devil’s Cut is only about 20 bucks for a metric liter if you want to give it a try.
By contrast, I’m also drinking Angel’s Envy, which even has wings printed on the back of the bottle, and which is around 50 dollars for the same volume. It’s also unique in that it’s a bourbon aged in port wine barrels. My favorite wine is aged in bourbon barrels, so I thought, why not go the other way? Angel’s Envy is silky smooth with sweet notes of tangerine and creamy vanilla, and undertones of chocolate, ripe fruit, and spice without compromising the smoothness. Its nose is unique, too, with dark cherry, brown sugar, and anise or licorice.
I don’t know if I’d mix either of them with much. On second thought, I can see the Devil’s Cut being good in a cocktail with Thyme spice. Regardless, I’m really enjoying sipping both of them straight up at room temperature as we go through these Heaven versus Hell songs.
Ready for the next battle? It’s Heavy Metal legend versus Heavy Metal legend, Ronnie James versus Lita. This first song starts out Hellbound, but quickly turns Heavenward. It’s Dio and “God Hates Heavy Metal.”
—————————————-
Dio – God Hates Heavy Metal
Lita Ford – Hellbound Train
—————————————-
“Hellbound Train” from Lita Ford up against Dio’s “God Hates Heavy Metal.” Which song do you declare the winner of the battle?
Still coming up are Heaven versus Hell shootouts featuring Kiss, G N R, Slaughter, and more!
[← —————- BREAK FILL for NET]We’re still playing Heaven versus Hell, and here’s another tough choice between two songs by the same artist. This is Kiss on Hard, Heavy & Hair.
—————————————-
KISS – Heaven’s On Fire
KISS – Unholy
—————————————-
Which do you like better? “Heaven’s On Fire” or “Unholy”? I know, it’s blasphemy pitting Kiss against Kiss, but you have to make a choice if you want to play to win.
Tamara, one of my interns, says this next versus is an easy choice. Maybe it is. What do you think? Do you vote Heaven or Hell with Slaughter versus Y & T?
—————————————-
Slaughter – Fly to the Angels
Y & T – Hell or High Water
—————————————-
“Fly to the Angels” or “Hell or High Water.” Which one wins?
There’s one more Heaven Versus Hell pair coming up, and it won’t be an easy one if you want to win those free records! Stay right where you are.
[ ======================================== BREAK 5]Here’s your final Heaven Versus Hell competitors for the week, the last combatants in this epic war between Rock N’ Roll Heaven and Rock N’ Roll Hell.
—————————————-
Guns N’ Roses – Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door
Guns N’ Roses – Sympathy for the Devil
—————————————-
That’s your final pair of Heaven Versus Hell songs. Guns N’ Roses versus Guns N’ Roses, but they’re both cover songs, so it’s really Bob Dylan versus the Rolling Stones. Which one do you pick? It’s not an easy choice no matter how you look at it.
Now, the part you’ve all been waiting for: how to enter to win an album of your choice on me.
Just visit PariahRocks.com, that’s P-A-R-I-A-H-R-O-C-K-S-dot com, and go to the Show Notes for this show, number 252, titled “Heaven Versus Hell.” In the show notes is a form to record your scores for which songs won in each Heaven versus Hell pairing. Fill that out, give me your name and email address, and you’re automatically entered to win an album of your choice (within reason). I’ll email winners and ask them what album they want, and how they want it–as MP3 download, on a CD, or, if available for the chosen album, on vinyl or cassette. I’ll then buy the albums and send it to the winners.
To make sure no one cheats and steals YOUR winnings, here’s a special keyword: Beelzebub. In the Heaven Versus Hell entry form in the show notes, there’s a field asking for the special keyword I said during the show. Only those who correctly answer that question will be entered to win. So remember: the keyword is Beelzebub, Beelzebub. You don’t need to know how to spell it; it will be there written for you. It’s the only one of the keyword choices beginning with a B. Beelzebub.
So, go right now to PariahRocks.com, to the Hard, Heavy & Hair show 252 Show Notes, and enter your scores and that secret word, Beelzebub, to enter for a chance to win.
AND, if you refer your friends, tell them to enter YOUR name in the field asking where you heard the show. That will automatically enter your friend AND you for a second chance to win in addition to your first entry!
