Thank you for joining me, all you headbangers and horn throwers, you foot stompers and air guitar strummers, you badasses and hairballs. My name is Pariah Burke. I’m your hard talking, heavy drinking, hairball of a horny hedonist host. I’m also the creator and producer of Hard, Heavy & Hair.
If this is the first time you’re joining us, welcome to the circus! Hard, Heavy & Hair is normally a 2-hour show that airs weekly on this station and others like it literally all around planet Earth on five continents. This week, in celebration of the 200th show, we’re rocking a full 3 hours of Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, and Hair Bands from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, 20-teens, and today.
Every half hour of the show is going to be a special segment including sets devoted to a hard rocking Avengers tribute; some of my favorite Hard, Heavy & Hairy cover songs from the last 100 shows’ Cover Songs of the Week; TWO different Radio Rewind segments; some of the best newer Hard, Heavy & Hairy releases of the last year or so; and a WHOLE lot more you are NOT going to want to miss a single minute of!
Let’s keep the party rolling with a trio of songs by bands from my hometown, Beantown, Bruins and Patriots territory. These bands are straight outta Boston.

Three of the most famous Hard, Heavy & Hairy bands to come out of my hometown of Boston. First was Godsmack with “Cryin’ Like A Bitch” from 2010. We’ll hear from Godsmack again later in the show. Next was Aerosmith with the biggest hit off their ’89 Pump LP, that was “Love in an Elevator.” The trio ended with a beautiful ballad from Malden, Massachusetts-formed Extreme, “More Than Words,” from their second album, Extreme II: Pornograffiti. That album was a BIG departure from Extreme’s self-titled first album for many reasons, not the least of which was the production by legendary producer Michael Wagener who has worked with Dokken, Alice Cooper, Skid Row, Motley Crue, Ozzy, Stryper, Warrant, and my friends, Apocalyptic Lovers.
[Drop-In: David Hope]One of the most astounding new artists the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show helped break is a Michigan 4-piece taking strong influence from one of the founders of the Hard Rock genre and stripping it back down to good, clean playing and amazing vocals. This is the giant-sized special Hard, Heavy & Hair 200th Show. I’m your host Pariah Burke.
Anyone who has listened to Hard, Heavy & Hair before knows a few things about me. First, I drink like a fish, usually bourbon. I’m half done with the bottle of Weller Special Reserve bourbon I opened as the show began. Secondly, that I am a horn dog. And, thirdly, that I often drink and date at strip clubs. I’m in Portland, Oregon, after all, and we have more strip clubs per capita than any other state or city in North America. AND, our strip clubs are full-nude, full-bar.
Back on Hard, Heavy & Hair number 156 in June of 2018 the entire show was Songs to Strip To, As Chosen by Real Working Strippers. A bunch of friends of mine–exotic dancers–worked with me to build the show full of Hard Rock, Metal, and Glam songs they and their friends peeled to.
The two tracks you just heard–Def Leppard – Pour Some Sugar On Me (the remix version) and My Darkest Days – Porn Star Dancing–were two of those songs. So was this one, “Voodoo” from Godsmack.

“Topless” from Breaking Benjamin, which was chosen by a friend of mine who dances at the world-famous Mary’s Club in Portland.
I first heard Shaman’s Harvest’s cover of Michael Jackson’s “Dirty Diana” in a strip club. I was at the rail, where I always am, giving stage love, when a slender, heavily tattoos brunette with the sexiest, most graceful transitions I’d ever seen started her set to the song. That woman, using the stage name Treason, and I have been friends for a few years now, and I’ve never forgotten that first time I saw her dance, no matter how many times she’s danced for me since.

The quintessential Hard, Heavy or Hairy song to strip to, Warrant’s “Cherry” pie closes out the set of songs to strip to as selected by my friends, real working strippers.
Coming up this hour is a trio of hard and heavy acts formed in Florida, some amazing cover songs, and maybe even that Hard, Heavy & Hairy tribute to the rock in the Avengers and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Let’s start with a music journalist who graduated from Broward Community College in Ft Lauderdale before forming his own band. Known then as Brian Warner, he’s better known to us now as Marilyn Manson.

38 Special – Rockin’ Into the Night

Going old school on the last one with 38 Special. They formed in Jacksonville, Florida, home of the Jaguars NFL team, long before them team in 1974. “Rockin Into the Night” comes from their third album, released in ’79. It was originally written for Survivor, the band that did “Eye of the Tiger,” and was sung by 38 Special guitarist Don Barnes, as were most of the band’s hits throughout the 80s.
Ahead of 38 Special was “45” from Shinedown, also from Jacksonville, but formed 22 years later, in 2001. “45” reached the number 3 spot on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart in 2003 with a later acoustic version also doing quite well.
From Florida to Sweden, this is Ghost with “Rats,” the first single from last year’s Grammy-nominated Prequelle album that saw the band go in a new direction and gain mainstream success.

A weekly feature of the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show is the Cover Song of the Week. Each week I play a Hard, Heavy or Hairy cover followed by the original recording of that song for comparison. Leading up to the Cover Song of the Week segment in the second hour of normal 2-hour shows, I drop clues and hints starting at Rock historian-minutia level and getting progressively easier. Listeners then guess from the clues the song being covered, the original recording artist, and the Hard, Heavy or Hairy artist doing the cover that week.
I’ve selected four of my favorite Cover Song of the Week cover songs from the last 100 shows.
I’ll play them all, starting with a song whose original dates back to 1938 but was best covered in ’77, Ram Jam’s rendition of “Black Betty.” After it you’ll hear Metallica covering Queen, Guns N Roses doing Clapton, and a Dio classic done by more of my fellow Bostonians, Killswitch Engage.

This is the 200th Hard, Heavy & Hair Show and we’re celebrating with 3 full hours of Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, and Hair Bands from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, and 20-teens. I’m your host Pariah Burke.
Right now we’re in the middle of a block of four amazing covers from the last 100 episodes. First was Ram Jam with “Black Betty,” a Lead Belly original from more than 80 years ago in 1938. That was the Cover Song of the Week on Hard, Heavy & Hair 119. Then a Cover Song of the Week suggested by a friend of mine, Emilee K in Salem, Oregon, “Holy Diver” as done by Killswitch Engage.
Next is Metallica doing one of my favorite Queen covers, “Stone Cold Crazy,” which won a Grammy. The Queen version was less aggressive and more humorous than Metallica’s, and the song wasn’t, in fact, a Queen original. Freddie Mercury sang a version of it with his pre-Queen band Wreckage. Bringing it to Queen, though, Freddie and the entire band reworked it, which is why they share writing credits on the 1974 release. Music magazine Q described “Stone Cold Crazy” as quote “thrash metal before the term was invented”. End Quote. In 2009, it was named the 38th best hard rock song of all time by VH1. I’ll be playing the original on next week’s Hard, Heavy & Hair. For now, enjoy the Metallica cover.

So far on this 200th Hard, Heavy & Hair Show I’ve played for you a trio of songs by bands from my home town of Boston and another trio from Florida, where I lived–specifically in Daytona Beach, then home of Bike Week, Spring Break, all night parties, and plenty of willing college girls. After Daytona started to become a country club for old men, I moved to the coolest city in North America, a place that has only gotten cooler with each passing year, Portland, Oregon.
[Clip: “Portland” – Nerf Herder ]Portland is the home to Tommy Thayer, lead guitar player, video editor, and songwriter for Kiss, but before Kiss, Tommy had another band, a band that is still here in Portland with my friend Brandon Cook now rocking the six-string. Brandon, Jaime St. James, Patrick Young, Pete Holmes, and Bob Capka are still playing shows like the M3 Festival, Hair in the Fair, and the Monsters of Rock Cruise with 80s Glam hits like this one, “Rock On.” This is Black ‘N Blue.

While Night Ranger isn’t an Oregon band, Night Ranger drummer Kelly Keagy wrote the band’s biggest hit about his sister’s life in Southern, Oregon. Keagy also sang the song to his sister Christy. This is that song about an Oregon girl followed by more recent metal from another Portland-native band.

That was Red Fang with “Prehistoric Dog” from their self-titled 2009 debut album. Red Fang wraps up a trio of songs paying tribute to my current home, THE coolest city in North America, Portland, Oregon.
[clip “Avengers Assemble”Have you seen Avengers: End Game? Of course you have. Everyone has. A more appropriate question would be how many TIMES you’ve seen Avengers: End Game. The movie wraps up 11 years of Marvel Films, putting final chapters on the stories of Tony Stark aka Iron Man; Steve Rogers, Captain America; and the Thunder God, Thor.
Music played a big part in the Marvel movies, especially when Iron Man was on screen. Tony Stark often wore band t-shirts on camera, and who could forget that rousing heroic entrance made by Iron Man in that 2012 first Avengers film, saving Captain America and a group of German people from certain death at the hand of Loki? It was THIS song Tony blasted through the commandeered speakers of the Quinjet.

Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: End Game also united Earth’s Mightiest Heroes with the Guardians of the Galaxy, itself two films in, with their own amazing soundtracks of 70s Pop and Rock including this classic:
[Clip – Hooked On a Feeling]Just kidding! Great song, but definitely not one that should be played on ANY episode of Hard, Heavy & Hair, not even this giant-sized 200th issue. There isn’t even a good Hard, Heavy or Hairy cover version of “Hooked On A Feeling” to play for a Cover Song of the Week. I know. I’ve looked. But, if you’re interested, the version of “Hooked on a Feeling” we’re all familiar with, the one by Blue Swede, IS a cover, not the original. The original was by B.J. Thomas in ’68 and didn’t include the “ooga chaka” intro.
Where the Guardians of the Galaxy feature into this Hard, Heavy & Hair tribute to the Avengers is with a song that PREDATES the Guardians movies by nearly 20 years. On their 1995 album Dopes to Infinity, Stoner Metal pioneers Monster Magnet wrote a song about Star-Lord’s dad, then only a comic book character. This is “Ego, the Living Planet.”

Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” played a pivotal musical role in the third Thor film, Thor: Ragnarok. You could hear a clip of the movie leading into the song before I mixed in the original and full Led Zeppelin track.
The entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, to date, began and ended with Tony Stark. It was 2008’s first Iron Man movie that officially launched the most famous and profitable movie shared universe no one–especially Batman and Superman studio Warner Bros–can seem to copy. Tony and Iron Man were the spine of the Avengers and the entire MCU for the last 11 years.
To close out the tribute to the end of the first saga of the franchise that entertained us for more than a decade (and hopefully for many more years to come), I’d like to play a song that is empathically NOT about the Marvel character, but one that HAS been in the movies, in trailers and the end credits of that universe-launching 2008 film. It’s a song we will forever associate with Tony Stark regardless of what Geezer Butler, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, and Bill Ward intended. This. Is. Iron. Man.
